SAFE AND
ENGAGED TRAINING
The Safe and Engaged Substitute Teacher Training Program presented by the Medina County Schools’ Educational Service Center (MCSESC) prepares substitute teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the goal of providing consistent delivery of quality instruction in a productive learning environment during the absence of a regular classroom teacher. The one-day class is fast-paced, interactive, and taught by highly qualified trainers who model the various techniques and strategies guest teachers are expected to use. Participants receive instruction in teaching strategies, classroom and behavior management, special education, legal issues, and professionalism. The Substitute Teacher Handbook, published by Utah State University’s Substitute Teaching Institute, is used extensively throughout the class and is available for participants to purchase.
The registration fee for the class is ($100) and includes materials, lunch, and other light refreshments. Purchase of the Substitute Teacher Handbook ($30) is optional but highly recommended. The handbook is available at the ESC and can be paid for with the registration below or on the day of class. You will receive an invitation with more information from our recruiters after your screening process has concluded.
Safe & Engaged Training is open to all, but required for NCSSA candidates based on the following criteria:
Candidate has a long-term or short-term sub license, but no education degree or other current educator’s license.

- or -
Candidate has a full license as an educator, but has not been employed as a regular school employee (teacher, administrator, guidance counselor, etc.) within the past 5 years.
EXCEPTION: If a candidate has retired from a NCSSA district, the Safe and Engaged Class will be waived. If a candidate has retired from or subbed in a non NCSSA district, the Safe and Engaged Class may be waived if an administrator from a district in which the candidate has subbed or worked signs a waiver attesting to satisfactory performance. The candidate will provide contact information for administrator and district. The form will be sent directly to the administrator from our office.
